To get engagement you need to be engaging

One of the hardest parts about being an author is growing your audience and getting your name out there, and that oftentimes means getting on social media.

I was talking to a friend the other day about social media, and she said something that I just loved.

To get engagement you need to be engaging!

Just making posts on social media isn’t enough. You have to check and see if anyone commented on your post and reply to as many of those comments as you can, even if that reply is just an emoji.

If you want people to engage with you, then you need to be willing to engage with them in return.

And you know what? Those replies to your commenters will improve your engagement rate, and that improves your position with the social media algorithm.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve consulted with a company about their social media, and when I did the review, I found they don’t ever interact with their followers. It doesn’t make sense. Social media is about being social!

You aren’t supposed to just talk at your followers, you should be communicating with them. It’s a back-and-forth exchange.

“Engagement” on social media refers to any form of interaction or response that users have with the content posted on these platforms. This can include actions like likes, comments, shares, saves, and even the number of views on a video. Engagement is a key metric in social media because it indicates not just how many people are seeing the content but how many are actively interacting with it.

Engagement is important because it provides insights into how well the content resonates with the audience. It’s a more meaningful metric than just follower count, as it reflects active interest and interaction from the audience. High engagement rates often lead to increased visibility on social media platforms due to their algorithms favoring content that generates interaction.

There are several types of engagement:

  1. Likes/Reactions: These are the most basic forms of engagement, showing that users have seen and reacted positively to the content.
  2. Comments: Comments are a deeper level of engagement, showing that users not only like the content but are also willing to spend time responding to it or initiating a discussion.
  3. Shares/Retweets: When users share or retweet content, they are essentially endorsing it and spreading it to their own followers, which can greatly increase the content’s reach.
  4. Saves/Bookmarks: Some platforms allow users to save or bookmark posts. This indicates that the content is valuable enough for users to want to come back to it later.
  5. Video Views and Watch Time: On platforms with video content, the number of views and the average watch time are crucial metrics. They show how engaging the video content is and whether people are watching it through to the end.

Improving social media engagement is crucial for building a vibrant, interactive online community around your brand or personal profile. Here are five effective strategies to enhance engagement on your social media platforms:

  1. Create High-Quality, Relevant Content: The cornerstone of social media engagement is compelling content. Your posts should be relevant, interesting, and valuable to your audience. Use high-quality images, engaging videos, informative infographics, and well-written texts. Tailor your content to the interests and needs of your followers, and ensure it resonates with them.
  2. Post Consistently and at Optimal Times: Regular posting keeps your audience engaged and your brand top-of-mind. Determine the best times to post when your audience is most active. Use analytics tools provided by social media platforms to understand when your posts receive the most engagement, and tailor your posting schedule accordingly.
  3. Engage with Your Audience: Social media is a two-way street. Respond to comments, messages, and mentions. Engaging in conversations, asking questions, and showing appreciation for user-generated content can build a stronger connection with your audience. This approach makes your followers feel heard and valued, encouraging more interaction.
  4. Use Hashtags and Trends Wisely: Hashtags can increase the visibility of your posts to a wider audience. Use relevant and trending hashtags to join broader conversations. However, it’s important to use them judiciously and ensure they are relevant to your content and audience.
  5. Run Contests and Giveaways: These are great ways to encourage active participation. Contests and giveaways can prompt your audience to engage with your content, such as by liking, commenting, sharing, or tagging friends. Make sure your contests are easy to participate in and offer desirable rewards.

Incorporating these strategies can significantly boost your social media engagement. Remember, the key is to understand your audience and continuously adapt your approach based on what works best for them. Engagement is not just about the numbers; it’s about building a loyal and interactive online community.
